Often with heartburn, what you consume is the culprit.
It's common knowledge that hot and spicy foods are frequent causes of heartburn, but other foods also contribute to acid indigestion and heartburn, including:
- Coffee, soft drinks, and other beverages with caffeine
- Fatty foods, such as french fries
- Citrus fruits and juices
- Tomato products, such as salsa
- Onions
- Chocolate
Another major trigger for heartburn is alcohol. Alcohol can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, causing heartburn by allowing acidic stomach contents to flow upwards into the esophagus.
