What can be done to avoid heartburn?
You can try to alleviate acid indigestion and heartburn by making a few changes to your lifestyle. Foods that cause your symptoms should be eaten in moderation. These may include: hot or spicy foods, acidic or citrus foods, fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol. In addition, smoking can cause heartburn by weakening the sphincter (the muscle that stops acid from splashing into your esophagus) and increasing the production of acid and movement of intestinal bile.
It is also recommended that you don't lie down right after eating. The horizontal sleeping position places extra pressure on the stomach and esophagus and can allow food and acid to travel back up into the esophagus. Being overweight or wearing tight clothing can cause pressure in the abdomen and result in the same discomfort.
